Level 2 — Targeted Support
Fresh Start Conversation Guide
A short, blame-free reset conversation. The message is not “you have missed too much school” — it is “we have noticed, we want to understand, and we are hitting restart together.” Use after the Pattern Review says Fresh Start is the right move.

Before the conversation
Tone check: this conversation should feel like an invitation, not a summons. If the student walks in expecting trouble, the reset has already failed.
Open the reset
Language that works
- Open with the relationship, not the record: “I wanted to check in — how are you doing?”
- Name the pattern without blame: “I noticed you have missed a few Mondays lately. I am not upset — I want to understand what is going on.”
- Invite their voice: “What is making it hard to get here right now?”
- Never open with: “You know you have missed X days, right?”
Listen
The reset message
Say the reset out loud
- “Here is what I would like to do. Starting [day], we are going to treat this like a fresh start — no lecture, no carry-over. Just a plan.”
- Name one concrete change the school will make (a welcome, a ride, a schedule fix, a person to check in with).
- Name one small thing the student can count on: a person, a place, a time.
- Confirm the review: “In ten days, you and I will look at how it is going — together.”

A Fresh Start conversation is not a warning and is not documented as discipline. It is the beginning of a plan. Record the barrier and the agreement on the Fresh Start Agreement & Plan form.
