Follow-Up — Tiered Attendance Intervention Guidance

Re-Engagement & Follow-Up

Sustain improvement after intensive intervention, reduce support gradually, and create a clear pathway out of intensive intervention.

Improvement matters even before perfect attendance is reached. Track attendance trajectory rather than simply compliant/noncompliant status.

When this tier applies

  • After a SARB plan or other intensive intervention is in place
  • When attendance is improving and supports should taper deliberately
  • When a case is being considered for closure

Key question: Is the improvement holding, and which supports still need to be in place?

What staff do at this tier

Practice guidance, not a referral checklist.

  1. 1At 30 days, verify promised supports were actually implemented.
  2. 2At 60 days, evaluate what worked, what changed, and what to modify.
  3. 3At 90 days, decide the path: sustain, taper, modify, coordinate further, reconvene, or close.
  4. 4Name and recognize improvement with the student and family.
  5. 5Keep the supports that are working when you reduce the level of intervention.
  • Attendance trend and trajectory
  • Implementation of promised supports
  • Student participation and family participation
  • Remaining and newly emerged barriers
  • Which supports are still doing the work

Decision point

At the review date, choose deliberately and record it.

Successful re-engagement

Recognize it and document what worked.

Continue monitoring

Hold the current level a while longer.

Reduce support level

Taper gradually, keeping what works.

Modify intervention

Adjust to the current barrier.

Additional coordinated support

Bring partners back in.

Reconvene SARB

The plan is not holding.

Move to a more intensive tier when

  • Attendance declines again after supports taper
  • A new barrier emerges that site support cannot resolve

Reduce the level of intervention when

  • Improvement holds across the 90-day window — reduce support level and return to Tier 1 monitoring
