Tier 3+ — Tiered Attendance Intervention Guidance

SART Formalized Attendance Intervention

Formalize expectations, supports, accountability, and coordinated intervention when attendance concerns remain persistent despite previous efforts.

SART should not repeat Site-Level Intervention or SST / MTSS team. It should advance the work.

When this tier applies

  • Attendance concerns persist after documented Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention
  • Expectations and responsibilities need to be written down and agreed to
  • Additional district or community resources need to be committed

What staff do at this tier

Practice guidance, not a referral checklist.

  1. 1Summarize what has already been attempted and what it produced.
  2. 2Confirm whether interventions were fully implemented.
  3. 3Confirm whether the barrier has changed.
  4. 4Write a plan with responsibilities for the student, family, school, and district.
  5. 5Set the attendance goal, the review criteria, and the progress-monitoring date.

SARB readiness review

Previous interventions remain insufficient and referral may be necessary.

Move to a more intensive tier when

  • • The SART plan was implemented and monitored and the concern remains significant
  • • Intensive district and community coordination is required

Reduce the level of intervention when

  • • Attendance is improving and supports can be managed at Tier 2 or Tier 3
